The novel

What we inherit.
What we choose.

In an unsettled Oslo, we meet a family with two mothers and a teenage daughter. When a man close to the family disappears, their trust in one another is put to the test.

The novel explores how stories about the past can shape a person's identity. Norse mythology and Viking Age history meet modern forensic science, while the family's everyday life gives the story its human weight.

Beneath the mystery lie questions of shame, loyalty, and belonging: What holds a family together? And what happens when what we believe about ourselves no longer holds true?

Work in progress · October 2026
The novel is in development. Work includes research into historical sources, Oslo as a setting, police work, and forensic science, alongside the development of characters and plot. No publication date has been set. The book is being written in Finnish first (Kaiku), followed by a Norwegian Bokmål edition (Ekko) and an English edition (Echo).

The author

Jaakko Rautio

I'm a Finnish-born writer based in Oslo. I write fiction in Finnish and am now developing the first book of a new crime series, planned in Finnish, Norwegian Bokmål and English.

Through this project, I want to write my way closer to the society I live in: its language, people, and places. My aim is to build a lasting writing career in Norway and contribute to Norwegian literature with experiences and perspectives drawn from life between languages and countries.

I'm interested in the people behind the actions—in trust, exclusion, and the choices we have to live with.
